Capsule Media Safeguards Production and Post with AJA Technology

July 30, 2014

Across a range of content for broadcast, live-events, commercials and films, Miami-based Capsule Media has a reputation for high-quality production and post services. The efforts of the studio, which was founded in 2002, have paid off in spades, as network juggernauts across the U.S., Europe and Latin America – including PBS, Discovery Channel and Univision – regularly turn to Capsule Media for production needs. Company CEO and Executive Producer Pascal Jacquelin, who oversees each project, draws heavily on the reliability of AJA technology to ensure seamless workflows throughout the life cycle of each show.

“I’ve always loved AJA gear, because it’s easy to use and you can rely on it,” he said. “The developers are so dialed into our needs in the field, and that shows through in every product. Their support team is also helpful when you need them most, so you never feel alone.”

AJA gear is at play both in the studio and out in the field to help Capsule Media complete a diverse range of projects ranging from “Shark Week” documentaries to a PBS mini-series about legendary musician and producer Quincy Jones. The studio’s equipment arsenal includes AJA Io XT Thunderbolt™ enabled professional video I/O devices, Ki Pro digital recorders, KONA 3G and KONA LHi capture and playback cards and HD10DA Mini-Converters. An extensive collection of cameras – including RED SCARLETs, SONY EX3s and DSLRs – is also at the team’s disposal. For documentaries or larger film projects, Jacquelin often rents ARRI ALEXAs or other digital cinema cameras.

Throughout most of Capsule Media’s HD shoots AJA HD10DA Mini-Converters are leveraged on-site to boost HD-SDI signals over long runs from each camera to switching stations. Jacquelin and team also rely on AJA Ki Pros to record footage in Apple ProRes 422, and regularly use the AJA Io XT for live streaming the Ki Pro signals during webcasts.

“AJA products are essential to our live production pipeline, and we use them year round,” he explained. “They’re sturdy and reliable, which is critical in live-event production. Once you’ve stopped recording, you’ve closed the file, and if you’re not sure the file is there, that’s catastrophic. With gear like the Ki Pro, I’m always confident the file will be there.”

In the studio Jacquelin maintains six edit suites that run the full gamut of creative applications for post production, including Avid® Media Composer®, Adobe® Premiere® Pro CC™ and Adobe® After Effects ®. Each of the six suites is equipped with a KONA 3G, KONA LHi or Io XT for monitoring and editing output throughout the post process. Once complete, projects are typically delivered to clients in 1080p.

For Capsule Media’s latest advertising campaign for Infinity Insurance, which was tied to the World Cup, the team shot with a 4K RED camera, uploaded footage to a workstation in the studio and then began editing with Adobe Premiere Pro CC. Using an HD signal generated by Premiere Pro, which was fed through the AJA Io XT, Jacquelin and team were then able to easily monitor in 1080 for a smooth editing experience. He explained, “The reliability of the Io XT is spot on. It’s also so plug and play – both on a software and hardware level – which made setup simple. I’ve tried other products, but none seem to compare.”
