IP Overview

The transition from SDI (Serial Digital Interface) baseband video to IP-based media workflows continues to accelerate. AJA offers a broad portfolio of solutions to help you deploy, integrate, and manage hybrid SDI/IP infrastructures. The continuous growth of IP transmission options provides users with an increasing variety of reasons to consider moving to IP, such as leveraging existing IP infrastructure, lower cost components compared to baseband infrastructure, and ease of set-up and expansion. 

AJA provides a wide range of products designed for the encode, decode, transcode, and transport of IP video, audio, and metadata. Whether you are looking for cinema quality, uncompressed, or compressed solutions, AJA IP video and audio products offer several choices to meet your needs. AJA’s IP technologies support workflow solutions across a range of protocols, such as NDI, Dante AV, the SMPTE ST 2110 suite with SMPTE ST 2022-7 hitless redundancy, and MPEG-TS with redundant SRT transport to ensure we are ready for your IP needs. 

NDI provides a cost-effective solution to transmit up to 4K on a single 1 GigE network interface. There has been tremendous acceptance of NDI in the ProAV market, and it’s now expanding into broadcast environments. NDI has been designed to be usable on standard networks and is easy to get started, as there are no unique timing requirements to support NDI transmission. In higher bandwidth and more complex systems, it is advisable to use a managed network switch. 

Dante AV works on a 1 GigE network and requires a managed switch. The signal is synchronized by a master clock that is designated by a lead device on the Dante Network. Dante AV leverages the familiar workflows and software used throughout the Dante audio ecosystem. 

SMPTE ST 2110 requires the most complex network since it is considered the IP replacement for SDI quality. Not only must every IP packet be delivered to maintain SDI quality video; perfect timing is also a necessity to ensure clean switching between sources. The timing reference is SMPTE ST 2059-2, which defines how Precision Time Protocol (PTP) is used for synchronization in professional media networks.  

AJA supports a variety of codecs to meet different use cases such as education, corporate, and large-scale live sporting events, with solutions from low bandwidth and variable delivery time to ultra-high quality with minimal latency for medical applications. By offering industry standard codecs and protocols, such as AVC/H.264, HEVC/H.265, JPEG XS (VSF-TR 07), JPEG 2000 (VSF-TR 01), and MPEG-2. AJA builds reliable, standards-based IP codec solutions for professional broadcast and media workflows. 

AJA IP video and audio products support the following codecs and transport protocols.

  • IP Protocols: NDI, Dante, Dante AV, and SMPTE ST 2110/ST 2022-7, and AES67
  • IP Video Codecs: H.264, HEVC/H.265, JPEG XS (VSF-TR 07), JPEG 2000, MPEG-2
  • IP Video Transport: SRT, UDP, RTP/UDP

SMPTE ST 2110

SMPTE ST 2110 enables the transport of media over managed IP networks. ST 2110 is used across broadcast, live production, ProAV, esports, virtual production, corporate media, government, defense, medical visualization, and other environments. AJA’s implementation supports uncompressed video alongside separate synchronized audio and ancillary data streams, allowing each essence to be routed and processed independently without unnecessary embedding and de-embedding. SMPTE ST 2110 support extends to: 

  • 2110-10 (System Timing)
  • 2110-20 (Uncompressed video)
  • 2110-21 (Traffic shaping for Uncompressed video)
  • 2110-30 (PCM Audio)
  • 2110-40 (Ancillary Data)

Our newest ST 2110 products which support up to 4K workflows are the BRIDGE LIVE IP, a SMPTE ST 2110/Streaming IP Video gateway. The KONA IP25 a PCIe I/O card for bridging popular content creation applications into the ST 2110 IP world, and the IP25-R, a next-generation IP Converter that seamlessly bridges ST 2110 IP media networks and traditional SDI baseband and HDMI infrastructures. Our 10 Gigabit network Mini-Converter products are IPT-10G2-HDMI, IPT-10G2-SDI, and IPR-10G2-SDI which converts HDMI/3G-SDI to/from ST 2110 IP video.

NMOS IS-04 and IS-05 provide industry standard configuration and control of AJA IP products, with extended options via web browser, AJA REST API, and AJA SDK (for PCI cards).

NDI

Network Device Interface (NDI) is a high-quality compressed IP video protocol, which is easy to implement in a range of applications like ProAV, eSports, broadcast, and streaming. NDI allows users to easily connect to various types of devices including LED displays, cameras, computers, and more via an NDI network for real-time content sharing and delivery. In addition to providing audio and video support, NDI also works across multiple sites featuring low latency transmission between multiple devices on the same network. 

BRIDGE NDI 3G is a high-density NDI gateway for reliable conversion to and from SDI and NDI, allowing reception and delivery simultaneously and up to 16-channels of 4K/UHD/HD/SD video transport. 

BRIDGE LIVE 12G-4 and 3G-8 SDI models extend the reach of protocols and streaming options further with real time IP video transcoding between UHD/HD/SD SDI, NDI, H.265, H.264, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, and optional JPEG 2000 and JPEG XS; includes the security and reliability of SRT and protocol support for UDP, HLS, RTP, RTMP/S over 10 GigE network connections. The BRIDGE LIVE IP adds SMPTE ST 2110 support to the BRIDGE LIVE family of products.

SRT

Secure Reliable Transport (SRT) is an open-source framework that optimizes the transmission of media over IP networks using transport protocols such as UDP (User Datagram Protocol). 

This ensures superior quality streams even when bandwidth or latency is not ideal – something that can be especially helpful in remote working scenarios or live events where reliable connectivity isn't always guaranteed, but high-quality streams need to be delivered quickly. 

HELO Plus, the BRIDGE LIVE SDI family, and BRIDGE LIVE IP products are SRT compliant AV / IP video transcode and delivery devices.

Dante IP Audio

Dante Audio is an IP audio transport solution developed by Audinate, designed to send audio over standard 1GbE IP networks. Dante is a proprietary solution with wide adoption of over 600 manufacturers and 4000 devices that are relatively easy to set up, deploy, and maintain. 

For Dante IP audio conversion, the OG-DANTE-12GAM is a flexible openGear card which supports 64-channels of simultaneous Dante IP audio embedding and de-embedding. The DANTE-12GAM is a Mini-Converter form factor of our popular openGear card, with a build in display for fast and easy configuration and control.

Dante AV

Dante AV is a protocol developed by Audinate that enables IP video transport over existing 1 GigE networks. AJA offers Dante AV Ultra 4K transmitters and receivers with high-quality encoding suitable for broadcast, live events, eSports, house of worship, corporate, and sports events. 

The Dante AV 4K-T and 4K-R encode and decode video and audio streams into the Dante AV Ultra IP video protocol which simplifies AV signal delivery while providing an efficient way to transmit video and audio synchronized signals with ultra-low latency between a wide range of devices. 

Complex Dante networks are easy to manage with easy-to-use configuration and control software for Windows and macOS including Dante Controller and Dante Studio from Audinate.

AES67

AES67 is an audio over IP (AoIP) standard developed by the Audio Engineering Society (AES). AES67 allows different IP-based audio networking systems to work seamlessly together, such as Dante, RAVENNA, Livewire, and Q-LAN, on the same network. The DANTE-12GAM and OG-DANTE-12GAM support AES67.
